European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
