Opening Notes

The author will be here shortly to cover this day's sprint race (2pm GMT) and qualifying (6pm).

Real-Time Updates

Formation Lap Period

The starting lap has begun.

Track Information

We have 19 laps around the lengthiest track in Formula One, the commentator informs us.

Countdown

The final countdown is on.

Racer Positions

An advantage in Verstappen's favour: his teammate Yuki Tsunoda is ahead of him by one place. He is unlikely to challenge Red Bull's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky interviewing Sky now: Gary Neville is with Mercedes.

The analyst is looking forward to the 2026 season, interviewing Adrian Newey about his stepping up to the team team principal.

Starting Positions

There are only 16 cars on the grid. This followed another poor grid-setting session for the driver: after coming twentieth and final in the previous race, leading to an eighth position in the main race, he did not manage to advance of Q1 once more on the previous day. Ferrari have consequently adjusted to his setup and so he begins from the starting area.

The team's Stroll and the Alpine pair of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Driver Comments

"We'll use the experience for tomorrow," says Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. Expect plenty of learning.

Constructors' Championship

The focus isn't solely on the individual championship: The team have dominated the team championship but the team, with a forty-point advantage over their rivals, will be hoping to seal second place this weekend. Russell can help them achieve that from the front row, and Kimi Antonelli will start just behind Verstappen.

Past Performance

Oscar Piastri won that day – as he did the previous season, as well. The driver from McLaren is going for a hat-trick.

Short Race Importance

Right, approximately 20 minutes to go till the short race gets under way. Unless something goes wrong, its main importance is as an indication of future events, rather than highly important in its itself, with only eight points available to the winner. However, second place here was sufficient for the driver to claim the title in a prior season.

The driver claimed the championship following his teammate's accident of Qatar GP sprint race.
