In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
