Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you become starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
